What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, is a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping or reconstructing the nose to improve its appearance or function. It is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed worldwide and can address various aesthetic and functional concerns related to the nose.

Here’s an overview of how rhinoplasty is typically performed:

  1. Consultation: Before the procedure, the patient will have a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon to discuss their goals, expectations, and concerns regarding their nose. The surgeon will evaluate the patient’s nasal anatomy, facial proportions, and skin quality to determine the most appropriate surgical approach and create a personalized treatment plan.

  2. Anesthesia: Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient’s preferences.

  3. Incisions: Depending on the specific goals of the surgery, rhinoplasty can be performed using either an open or closed technique:

    • Open Rhinoplasty: In open rhinoplasty, an incision is made across the columella, the strip of tissue between the nostrils, allowing the surgeon to lift the skin and access the underlying structures of the nose with better visibility and precision.

    • Closed Rhinoplasty: In closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, resulting in no visible external scarring. This technique is typically used for less complex cases where access to the nasal structures is not as extensive.

  4. Reshaping: Once the incisions are made, the surgeon will reshape the nasal structures to achieve the desired outcome. This may involve:

    • Removing or Adding Tissue: Excess bone, cartilage, or tissue may be removed to refine the shape of the nose, while grafts or implants may be used to augment or support specific areas.

    • Nasal Bridge: The nasal bridge may be narrowed, straightened, or augmented to improve symmetry and balance.

    • Nasal Tip: The nasal tip may be refined by reshaping the cartilage and altering its projection, rotation, or definition.

    • Nostrils: The size, shape, and symmetry of the nostrils may be adjusted to improve overall nasal aesthetics.

  5. Closure: Once the desired changes are made, the incisions are meticulously closed with sutures, and the nose is bandaged to support the newly sculpted structures and promote proper healing.

  6. Recovery: After rhinoplasty, patients typically experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the nose and eyes, which can be managed with medication and cold compresses. Most patients can return to normal activities within a week or two, although strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks to allow for proper healing.

  7. Results: The final results of rhinoplasty become gradually apparent as swelling subsides and the tissues settle into their new position. While some minor swelling may persist for several months, the majority of the swelling resolves within the first few weeks, revealing the final outcome of the surgery.
