Arm lift surgery, also known as brachioplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at reshaping the upper arms by removing excess skin and fat, and tightening the underlying supportive tissues. This procedure is often sought by individuals who have experienced significant weight loss, aging, or genetics that have resulted in loose, sagging skin in the upper arm area, often referred to as “bat wings.”
Here’s an overview of how arm lift surgery is typically performed:
Consultation: Before the procedure, the patient will have a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon to discuss their goals, expectations, and medical history. The surgeon will evaluate the patient’s upper arm anatomy, skin elasticity, and degree of laxity to determine the most suitable approach for the brachioplasty.
Anesthesia: Arm lift surgery can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the patient’s preferences and the extent of the procedure.
Incisions: The surgeon will make discreet incisions on the inner aspect of the upper arms, where they are less visible. The length and pattern of the incisions will depend on the amount of excess skin to be removed and the desired outcome.
Tissue Removal: After making the incisions, the surgeon will remove excess skin and fat from the upper arms. In some cases, liposuction may be used to further contour the area and remove stubborn pockets of fat.
Tissue Tightening: Once the excess tissue has been removed, the remaining skin is carefully draped over the newly contoured arm and tightened to create a smoother, more toned appearance. The underlying supportive tissues may also be tightened to enhance the overall contour of the arms.
Closure: Once the desired correction has been achieved, the incisions are closed with sutures, and any necessary dressings or bandages are applied to protect the surgical sites.
Recovery: After the procedure, patients typically experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with pain medication and cold compresses. It’s essential to follow post-operative instructions provided by the surgeon to facilitate proper healing and optimize results.
